As concerns mount over the identification and disposal of the bodies of persons killed in West Kingston, more decomposing bodies are being buried at the May Pen Cemetery on Spanish Town Road.

Our news team ventured to the area to observe the operations there and was told to move from the cemetery gate by the police who are guarding the process.

Before the police established a presence on the scene, our news team was able to go inside the facility where they saw at least eight decomposing bodies in one section and a further five down the road including at least one female and a child.

The stench in the cemetery is overpowering.

Gladstone Wilson, who identified his 20-year-old son, requested that his body be given to the family for private burial.

“We are asking the government if we can get the body to bury, he was brutally murdered and we would like to get his body to bury,” he said.

Mayor demands answers
Meanwhile, Mayor of Kingston Desmond McKenzie is demanding answers from the police as to who gave them permission for the bodies to be taken to the May Pen Cemetery on Spanish Town Road.
Mr. McKenzie has launched an investigation into the matter and is to meet with Commissioner of Police Owen Ellington on Thursday.

The Mayor is fuming after viewing images on TVJ on Wednesday night of the police taking pauper coffins to the Cemetery.

According to Mr. McKenzie, the police burials are illegal as no burial order was sought from the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC) which has been closed for the past few days.
Mr. McKenzie says despite the current State of Emergency, these burials are a breach of KSAC regulations.

“The May Pen Cemetery has been out of operation for the past couple of days. I know of no such request that was made and if there is any truth to these allegations that bodies are being buried in the May Pen Cemetery without going through the legal procedure, then you know that is a matter that is not going to end there,” Mayor McKenzie said.

The police have said it is normal procedure to bury decomposing bodies as quickly as possible once they have been examined by a pathologist.

NDM also concerned
And, the National Democratic Movement (NDM) has also raised questions about the burial of bodies in the May Pen Cemetery.

The party is calling for a thorough investigation of the joint police-military perations in Tivoli Gardens and says it wants to know if the bodies of persons identified by relatives and were DNA samples taken and photos taken of the bodies.

The party says it believes that as the Prime Minister and Member of Parliament for the area Bruce Golding must break his silence and account personally to the people of his constituency.
